Cubs Minor League Daily: Villanueva Homers, Young Keeps Streaking, Tennessee Sweeps, More

chesny young pelicansNormally I have something to write in this space, but I spent my evening watching recent prospect Kyle Schwarber do awesome things in Cincinnati instead.

I don’t regret that decision.

On to the highlights.

Scores From Yesterday

Iowa – One rough inning sunk the Cubs. They lost 6-5.
Tennessee – The Smokies swept a doubleheader, winning the first game 3-2 and the second 3-1.
Myrtle Beach – This game could not have gone much better for the Pelicans. They won 12-0.
South Bend – South Bend also won in a shutout. Their final was 5-0.
Eugene – Eugene avoided the shutout by scoring in the ninth, but they still lost 3-1.
Arizona – The Cubs jumped out to an early lead that became an 8-1 win.

Performances of Note

  • [Iowa] Christian Villanueva homered again and now has 13 this season. Going back to July 16, Villanueva has had 2 hits in 5 of 6 games (including this one) and homered in 3 of them (and twice on July 17). In that span he has raised his SLG from .442 to .498.
  • [Iowa] Rubi Silva added his 10th homer of the season. Silva has now homered in 4 straight games.
  • [Iowa] The Cubs bullpen combined to pitch 4.2 innings of scoreless relief. Ben Rowen allowed 2 hits and struck out 3 over 1.2 innings, Armando Rivero followed with on inning that included a walk and a strikeout, and Blake Cooper handled the final 2 frames with a walk and 4 strikeouts.
  • [Tennessee] Game Two ended when Bryant Flete hit a walk off 2 run homer. It was his first for the Smokies.
  • [Tennessee] Ivan Pineyro struck out 7 over 7 innings and allowed a run on 7 hits in the second contest. Felix Pena struck out 10 in 4.2 innings while allowing 2 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks in the first one.
  • [Tennessee] Willson Contreras caught the first game, finishing 2 for 3 at the plate with a double. He was 0 for 3 as the DH in the second contest.
  • [Tennessee] Making their Smokies’ debuts, Jacob Rogers went hitless but walked twice between the two games, and Jeimer Candelario finished a combined 1 for 5.
  • [Tennessee] Albert Almora, back from the Pan Am Games, went 1 for 3 in Game One and 1 for 2 with a double and a walk in Game Two.
  • [Myrtle Beach] Jen-Ho Tseng pitched 5 scoreless innings, but they weren’t smooth innings. He allowed 3 walks and 5 hits while striking out 3. James Pugliese allowed one walk in his 3 innings of work, and Jasvir Rakkar (also back from the Pan Am games) struck out one in a flawless final frame.
  • [Myrtle Beach] Chesny Young finished 2 for 5.
  • [Myrtle Beach] Mark Zagunis doubled and finished with 3 hits. Kevin Brown doubled twice and finished with 4 hits.
  • [Myrtle Beach] Cael Brockmeyer hit a grand slam, finished 2 for 5, and drove in 5 runs. It was his first High A homer.
  • [South Bend] Erick Leal gave up 7 hits and a walk in his 8 innings of work, but thanks in part to 8 strikeouts he did not give up a run. Ryan McNeil struck out a pair to finish the game.
  • [South Bend] Rashad Crawford doubled for the Cubs’ only extra base hit.
  • [South Bend] Jeffrey Baez, who has also been hot lately, finished 3 for 4 with his 18th steal. During his 10 game hitting streak he has raised his line from .176/.242/.271 to .234/.289/.365.
  • [Eugene] The Emeralds got their run via the 3rd homer of the season off the bat of Eloy Jimenez.
  • [Eugene] Oscar De La Cruz struck out 3, walked 2, and allowed 2 runs (one earned) on 4 hits in his 6 innings on the hill. Greyfer Eregua allowed another run on 2 hits while striking out 2 in his 2 innings of work.
  • [Arizona] Rehabbers Matt Brazis and Trey McNutt eached pitched a scoreless inning of work. Brazis posted nothing but zeroes while McNutt allowed a hit and a walk while striking out 2. Scott Effross of the 2015 draft struck out 2 in his scoreless inning.
  • [Arizona] Carlos Sepulveda doubled and finished 2 for 5. His double was the only extra base hit for the AZL Cubs.
  • [Arizona] Michael Foster finished 3 for 3 with 2 walks.
  • Other News

  • The Chesny Young on-base streak is up to 39 games. (Edit: @NSidersReport says it’s actually 40. It’s just too high to keep track!)
  • The Smokies’ sweep came against first place Birmingham, but afterwards Tennessee was still seven games behind.
  • There were a number of promotions in the minors yesterday, including Candelario and Rogers to Tennessee, but the shuffling is likely not done. Of note, we are still waiting to find out where Ian Happ will be headed next.
  • Billy McKinney is not known for his defense, but he still turned in a great play to rob a homer last night.
