Cubs Reportedly Sign LHP Ryan Buchter to Minor League Deal

Chicago Cubs

The Cubs have reportedly signed left-handed pitcher Ryan Buchther to a minor-league contract in a move that adds an arm and some minor league left-handed pitching depth.

The move has not been made official by the Cubs at this time.

This isn’t Buchter’s first stint in the Cubs organization. The Nationals traded Buchter to the Cubs on November 3, 2008 in exchange for Matt Avery. The Cubs then traded Buchter to the Braves on May 26, 2011 in exchange for Rodrigo Lopez.

He has one game of big league experience, picking up a win in extra innings against the Nationals on June 20, 2014 after a scoreless inning of relief work. Buchter has plenty of minor league experience, pitching in 354 games, finishing 126 of them and starting two others. He has 461.2 innings under his belt, a 32-16 record, 3.31 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, 560 strikeouts and 306 walks.

Buchter last pitched for the Dodgers’ Triple-A affiliate in Oklahoma City, where he was 0-0 with a 1.65 ERA in 27 relief appearances (32.2 innings).

He held fellow southpaws to a .205/.271/.250/.571 slash line with 18 strikeouts (37.5 K%) in 3 walks (6.25 BB%) in 48 plate appearances. Right-handed hitters this season own a .240/.352/.293/.646 slash with 21 strikeouts (22.83 K%) and 13 walks (13.13 BB%) in 92 plate appearances.

In his last 10 outings, Buchter has faced 50 batters and allowed a .326/.380/.413/.793 slash, struck out 12 (24.0 K%), with 4 walks (8.0 BB%). Opponents BABIP during this stretch was .441. He recorded no decisions during this stretch, but did pick up a pair of saves.

Buchter signed with the Dodgers on Dec. 22, 2014 on a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training. He exercised an out clause in his contract on July 20, allowing him to be a free agent.
