I can barely describe this game … the range of emotions …
It started with a haunting, familiar feeling for three and a half innings. The Rockies jumped out a four-run lead, and the Cubs’ bats weren’t getting anything done. Indeed, through three innings, they hadn’t notched a hit against Jorge De La Rosa.
But then the Cubs did notch a hit – lots of them! Six runs in the fourth, and things looked great. The Cubs added an insurance run late, and came into the 9th with a 7-4 lead. The joy. The expectation.
But Jason Motte’s pitch-to-contact style yielded too much hard contact, and Rafael Soriano’s pitch-to-really-hard-contact style yielded a comeback-capping two-run homer to Carlos Gonzalez.
And I felt like a damn fool because I sat there not believing what I’d just seen. How could that happen after the weekend the Cubs just had? And how do you recover from that? I sat there knowing that I wouldn’t recover, and I was going to have to drag myself through tomorrow like an undead beast. The dread. The anger.
… and then Kris Bryant hit a two-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth.
