Having failed to consummate a deal with the Mets last night – for mysterious and disputed reasons – the Brewers wasted no time, and wound up getting a deal together with the Astros for Carlos Gomez, as well as starter Mike Fiers:

It all just happened so fast.
Thoughts:
(1) That’s a huge return for the Brewers on Gomez/Fiers, but Gomez is a stud, and Fiers is solid and extremely cost-controlled.
(2) The Astros, having landed Scott Kazmir and now Fiers are presumably out of the pitching market – they were often cited as the hardest pushers for a deal with San Diego (with whom we believe the Cubs have some interest).
(3) Fiers wasn’t scheduled to start in this series, but Gomes sure was. That’ll help the Cubs a bit.
(4) These players don’t go to an NL team, which is slightly better for the Cubs’ playoff chances.
(5) The Brewers will start stockpiling prospects for a run in the future, as have the Reds. Be aware down the road.
