The Cardinals made another move to shore up their bullpen today, acquiring setup man Jonathan Broxton from the Brewers – that’s right, send every player out of town this weekend, Milwaukee – for low-minors prospect Malik Collymore and cash considerations. Presumably, the Cardinals are taking on some salary for Broxton, but Collymore was a borderline top 30 prospect in the Cardinals’ system. So not nothing. Not major. But not nothing.
The Cardinals have two starters – Carlos Martinez and Michael Wacha – who are already past their innings total from last year, and project to go way, way over (especially if there’s a run in the playoffs). Having a huge bullpen to assist, then, is going to be a big deal.
Broxton, by the way, has a terrible ERA this year (5.89), but solid peripherals. So, when he gets good results with the Cardinals, that won’t be Voodoo Magic, it’ll just be positive regression.
