The Cubs got offensive contributions up and down the lineup, including a massive homer from Addison Russell. Clayton Richard did everything you would hope he could against the Brewers today, giving the Cubs six excellent innings. (Kris Bryant was hurt in the middle innings, and we’re awaiting word on the injury.)
Things got a little dicey in the 9th, when the first two batters reached via singles. Hector Rondon struck out the next batter, got a force out grounder from the next batter, and then got a harmless grounder to short to ostensibly end the game. But Starlin Castro booted the routine ball, keeping the game alive. The next batter singled, scoring the Brewers’ third run and putting the tying run at second. It was nervousness time.
Logan Schafer then ripped one to center … but thankfully right at Dexter Fowler. Whew.
And it’s a four-game sweep! Even against a depleted, middling team, taking four in a row on the road is not an easy task.
