Chicago Cubs

In case you missed it last night amidst the numerous delays, near-starts, shut-downs, and weather speculation, the Cubs and Pirates did not resume their game again after it was delayed just before the fifth inning began. It was raining in Pittsburgh right up until game time, but apparently weather folks in the know expected it to abate in time for the game to get in. Instead, the two teams got in just shy of two innings before the first delay – two hours and nine minutes – set in. Then, play resumed to get in another couple innings before the second delay ended the game.

No date has yet been scheduled for the makeup game, so it doesn’t sound like we’ll be seeing a doubleheader in the next two days.

I also wouldn’t bet on Jon Lester, who threw only 31 pitches, starting again before his next scheduled start. It’s just a tricky thing to mess with the schedules of both Lester and the other starters – you really have to have the perfect situation to make it work. The Cubs haven’t made any kind of announcements on that, but I’d expect Lester doesn’t go again until Saturday, as scheduled (against the Giants, and I’ll be there!).

Speaking of the Giants, they lost last night when the Braves mounted a dramatic six-run comeback, capped in the 9th by a two-out, two-run, game-tying A.J. Pierzynski homer. The Braves walked it off in the 12th inning – after the Giants had briefly taken the lead – with another two-run homer.

Thanks, Braves. Also, thank you for wearing down the Giants’ bullpen with a long game.

And an EBS, just for fun:
