The Cubs selected Bryan Hudson in the third round of the 2015 draft. He was the first pitcher they selected this year.
Last night the 6’8″ lefty, taken out of a high school in Illinois, made his professional debut in Arizona. It was not a particularly auspicious debut as he allowed two runs on two hits and a walk in two thirds of an inning, but it was a start. He will definitely have better appearances down the road.
Hudson is very raw, so it may take a couple of years before we have a good read on his potential, but the pre-draft reports billed him as a guy with mid-rotation upside. He won’t move into that job any time soon, but there is upside there worth waiting on.
There is also enough upside to make him a candidate for the Top 40. Until today he was not eligible for inclusion since he had not pitched professionally in the Arizona Rookie League or higher, and unfortunately he took the mound just days after the range in which he would have fit, high twenties to mid thirties, had been published. I suppose we can consider him an unofficial member of the lower levels of the list. He will certainly be a candidate when the 2016 edition comes together next spring.
