Only three farm teams were active yesterday, so this seems like a good time to get in one more Prospect Trivia before the minor league season ends. I’ve stuck to recent history for most Trivia’s this year, so for this one I’m reaching back just a little further.
To the 1990s, to be exact. And I’m probably pushing the definition of ‘Prospect’ a little far, but we’ll go with it.
Major League Baseball expanded twice in the ’90s, and that means there were two expansion drafts (1993 and 1997). In each draft the Cubs lost three players, and from each of those groups of three there was one player who went on to have a lengthy major league career. Who were those two players?
Need a few hints?
From the 1993 draft, the player you are looking for was taken by the Rockies. He is now just about a household name in many baseball cities, but I suspect most of you never associate him with Colorado at all.
The 1997 draftee went to Tampa, and he actually had a more productive playing career (as measured by total bWAR) than the 1993 player. He hung around Major League Baseball through the 2012 season.
What’s that? That was too easy?
Fine. Bonus question. These two players, after they both had been taken in an expansion draft, went on to play together for two different teams. Name those teams.
The answers will appear in the Bullets later this morning. Try not to turn to the Googles, and, if you do, don’t spoil it for others.
