Although the aggregate was a disappointing loss, there were plenty of bright spots in last night’s game, from the overall spirit of a team that keeps coming back, to Addison Russell’s heads up triple, to another Chris Coghlan homer, to some well-pitched relief innings.
And then there was Kyle Schwarber, doing his beastly thing on this three-run shot to right:

If that looked like a bomb to you, it was. Home Run Tracker had it at 419 feet and 110.5 mph off of the bat.
I love how hard Schwarber swung at that one, while still remaining under control. It was a terrible pitch – it was supposed to be up and in, but it bled way out over the middle of the plate – and Schwarber did with it what you hope a power hitter would do with such a mistake.
But that wasn’t the only Schwarber highlight from the game. There was also him showing off the gun in left field to nail Jose Iglesias at the plate, which you can watch here. Perfect fielding form? Nope. Perfect throw? No. But he aggressively pursued the ball and put himself in a good position to make a strong throw – which it very much was. Even with two outs and a decent runner in motion, Schwarber got the ball there in plenty of time because of the oomph on the toss. It was a nice play. It actually came in the top of the frame in which he hit the homer. Schwarber owned that 5th inning.
As for the outcome of the game – here’s hoping tonight goes a little better.
