Luke’s out this morning, so you’ll get a short version of the Daily from me. No complaining! A lot of the shortness comes from a couple teams not playing …
If you are a full or part-time catching prospect, you homered in this game. Victor Caratini, Cael Brockmeyer, and Ben Carhart all went deep. Carhart did it twice. All three guys are plausible future big leaguers behind the plate, perhaps not as starters, but as conceivable contributors.
Carhart, 25, just started converting to catcher last year, and is hitting .258/.324/.467.
Brockmeyer, 23, has played at four levels this year, but is settling in at High-A, hitting .247/.357/.398.
Caratini, who just turned 22 and is the most prospect-y of the bunch, is hitting just .244/.330/.347 at Myrtle Beach on the year. HOWEVA, he’s in just his second year of catching and second year of full season ball. And the 11.0% walk rate and 16.4% strikeout rate sure look nice.
Brad Markey went 5.2 innings in this one, giving up 3 ER on 8 H and 0 BB. He struck out 6.
Jeffrey Baez’s second half tear continues – he added two hits in this one and a stolen base. That base was home, which is cool. It was also his 29th steal of the season, which is pretty amazing when you see him. Doesn’t look like a prototypical base-stealer or even a speed guy. But he’s clearly got it.
Charcer Burks also stole a base in this one (26), and had three hits, including his third homer of the year. Burks, 20, is an interesting guy with good speed and a nice approach at the plate, but he’ll have to add a lot more power if he’s going to hold down a corner outfield spot going forward. He’s hitting .269/.340/.358 on the year.
Ryan McNeil threw 2.1 scoreless in relief this year – he’s been pitching out of the pen in his first full year back from Tommy John surgery, and he’s going to be a breakout candidate next year.
Corbin Hoffner has reinvented himself as a submariner, and he lowered his ERA on the year to 0.34 in this one.
Not a ton of offense in this one, as the Emeralds’ only extra base hits came from Donnie Dewees (a triple, as part of a two-hit night) and Eloy Jimenez (a double).
Casey Bloomquist, the Cubs’ 17th rounder this year, increased his K:BB to 18:1 on the year.
The only run in the game came after a walk, a groundout, a groundout, and an error.
The big news was on the pitching side, where Duane Underwood, Jr. made his second rehab appearance, striking out two over three scoreless innings. He walked none and allowed two hits.
Underwood was followed by Cubs third rounder Bryan Hudson, who pitched two scoreless, allowing one hit and striking out one. It was his third straight scoreless appearance, and he’s obviously going to be a guy to watch next year.

In discussing the potential for a Cubs move today for a fresh arm, I wondered if they'd go down and grab someone already on the 40-man roster or if they'd shift Julian Merryweather over to the 60-day IL to make...
