Jake Arrieta. No-Hitter.
That was so much fun, and I am on a shared-fandom cloud. Hope you all are enjoying this, too. He came so close three times last year, and now he gets it.
As for the game, itself …
Kris Bryant homered in the first inning, and, although the Cubs had an almost comical number of great chances to score thereafter, the two runs his blast provided were the only the Cubs would score. Thanks to Arrieta, they were the only runs the Cubs would need.
Starlin Castro couldn’t make a play on a very hard hit ball right at him earlier in the game, and it was ruled an error. I think that was the right call, though folks will talk about it. The game didn’t have a “signature” defensive play like you see in so many no-hitters, but several very good plays.
And Arrieta, of course, was so nasty. His slider was exceptional down in the zone, inducing a herculean number of swings and misses. Incredible game.
Take a bow, Jake.
