And so ends Mike Olt’s tenure with the Chicago Cubs.
It was likely to happen at the end of the year anyway, because even if he’d cleared waivers and was outrighted to Iowa after he was designated for assignment earlier this week, he would have become a free agent at the end of the year. Given the Cubs’ extreme infield glut, he probably wouldn’t have re-signed a minor league deal with the Cubs.
That’s all academic, though, because the White Sox claimed Olt, 27, off of waivers from the Cubs, and he’ll be added to the White Sox’s 40-man roster, and will presumably get some look-see playing time down the stretch.
Perhaps he shows some good stuff, sticks on the 40-man all offseason, and then gets a chance to make the White Sox club in 2016. For a guy who’s been through some ups and downs (and some bad luck), that’s what I’ll be pulling for.
One last time …
