Anthony Rizzo pulled a little psyyyyyyche action on the bases tonight against the Reds:
If you regard that as all entirely intentional, it was freaking brilliant, as it allowed Starlin Castro to reach on a routine grounder. Rizzo retreats on the grounder as expected, and then breaks for third a bit earlier than you’d expect as Eugenio Suarez readies to throw. Did he do that because he knew he’d have to break early to reach third safely after the throw to first? Or did he do it purely to distract Suarez, which is exactly what happened?
Whatever it was, I loved it.
And it reminded me of Rizzo’s other basepath antics, even if this one wasn’t quite magic:
