No Addison Russell in Today’s Lineup, Replaced by Javy Baez

Chicago Cubs

The lineup as the Cubs take on John Lackey and try to clinch their NLDS series:

Obviously the big omission from today’s lineup is Addison Russell, who suffered a hamstring injury last night, and was considered day-to-day. Javy Baez takes Russell’s spot at shortstop, and at the bottom of the order. We’ll see if Russell is available at all for the game, but it seems pretty unlikely. You’d hate to see the Cubs playing a guy short in a game where the bullpen – and, thus, pinch hitters – could be employed liberally.

As for the rest of the lineup, it should look familiar, because it’s the one that knocked the ball around yesterday. The match-up is very different (Lackey features typical splits, Michael Wacha was the reverse of what you’d expect for a righty), but I can understand the thinking in not wanting to mess with what was working.

Of course, with the wind likely blowing in from left in this one, some of the balls that went out yesterday probably wouldn’t make it today. Hopefully the Cubs can frustrate Lackey a bit more than they did on Friday (Chris Coghlan has been swapped out for Jorge Soler here, and David Ross has been replaced by Miguel Montero), and if it takes some small ball, then that’s fine, too.
