Some cool potential news from this GM Meetings this week, as Commissioner Rob Manfred indicated that MLB hopes to have a team head to Cuba this Spring Training to play an exhibition game against the Cuban national team. With relations between the U.S. and Cuba finally thawing, having an MLB team come down to play a game there could actually be a great national thing for both countries, to say nothing of the enjoyable baseball, itself.
But which MLB team will get to go? Well, as that New York Times article indicates, the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, and Orioles are under consideration.
And, also the Cubs, according to Theo Epstein (ESPN, CSN). Epstein says that many teams would be under consideration, and, at this stage, teams are really only saying whether, yes, they’d be interested, or, no, they would not. The Cubs would be interested.
It doesn’t sound like there’s much of a time line yet for a decision, as some of the aspects are up to the respective governments and not MLB. But, man, that would be pretty cool to get to see the Cubs take on the Cuban national team. I mean, I’d watch even if it were the Yankees or Red Sox, but it would be especially gratifying to see the Cubs get the honor.
