More on Jake Arrieta, Cy Young Winner … and Free Agent Recruiter? And Other Bullets

Chicago Cubs

Until then, Bullets …

  • Jake Arrieta’s Cy Young win last night was more convincing than I thought possible, with him receiving 17 of the 30 first place votes, and Zack Greinke netting just 10. Arrieta was first or second on all but two ballots, and Greinke was first or second on all but three. By the end of the season, I’d come to believe Arrieta deserved the award, but I wasn’t sure he’d win it.
  • Arrieta becomes the first Cubs starter to win the Cy Young since Greg Maddux in 1992. More on the win, and on Arrieta’s thoughts from his killer season here at
  • The Arrieta win gave the Cubs a sweep on the three major awards for which they had a finalist (Cy Young, Rookie of the Year (Kris Bryant), and Manager of the Year (Joe Maddon)). That’s freaking awesome, and is completely in line with how fun this season was. No team has won three BBWAA awards like that since the stupidly loaded 2001 Mariners team.
  • The Cubs will presumably be happy to pay it, since the attendant positive vibes are good for business, too, but this Cy Young win likely bumps up Arrieta’s arbitration projections for 2016 and 2017 a little bit. Hey: he earned it.
  • A fun aside from the win:
