Having just watched Jason Heyward’s introductory press conference via CSN Chicago, I have to admit that I kept catching myself wearing a big dopey grin listening to the newest Cub talking about why he chose the team and what’s coming in the future. I’m rather confident that fans are going to love this guy.
Heyward, thoughtful and modest, made it quite clear that this was the team that he wanted to be a part of. Yes, he likes playing at Wrigley Field (he’s open to center or right field, by the way), and yes he felt like it was a good fit. But the way he described making his decision – which was not about getting every last dollar – was enough to put big dopey grins on the faces of any Cubs fans who were watching. Heyward simply saw himself being a part of this team and this group and competing in the NL Central.
You can see the introduction of Heyward in the video below, together with some of his initial remarks. If more video becomes available from the press conference (it only just ended a little while ago), I’ll add it. I’ll also have more on the actual baseball substance of his comments, as well as Theo Epstein’s and Jed Hoyer’s.
For now, enjoy the moment:
