The Cubs continued their busy offseason by inking a pair of outfielders to minor league contracts.
Juan Perez and Kelly Dugan will join the Cubs organization on minor league deals, per the MiLB transactions page (h/t CCO). Both have extensive minor league experience adding up to a combined 1,257 minor league games.
Of the two, Perez has the most major league experience having played 117 games with the Giants since 2013. Perez has a .224/.267/316/.583 slash line in 246 career plate appearances. The right-handed hitting Perez made his big league debut with the Giants on June 9, 2013 against the Diamondbacks, going 1-for-3 with an RBI single off Tyler Skaggs.
Perez made 40 plate appearances in 22 games with he 2015 Giants, slashing .282/.300/.359/.659 in the process. For his career, Perez has been regarded mostly as an excellent defensive outfielder who can play all three positions well.
Dugan, 25, has yet to crack the major league roster. He was a Phillies second-round pick in 2009 out of Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, Calif., but has yet to make it to The Show.
[adinserter block=”2″]His best seasons came in 2012 and 2013, but never really built off those campaigns. In 2012 with Class-A Lakewood of the South Atlantic League, Dugan posted an .857 OPS with 12 home runs, 60 runs batted in, 33 doubles and a 9.67 BB% in 496 plate appearances.
The left-handed hitting Dugan followed that up by posting an .858 OPS in 473 plate appearances over two levels, mashing 20 homers and driving in 59.
Over the course of his 508-game minor league career, Dugan has amassed 2,088 plate appearances and put up a .290/.364/.436/.800 slash line with 43 homers, 223 RBIs and 112 doubles. He has played all three outfield spots and has spent time at first base, but most of his time in the field has come in right field (327 games, 2770.1 defensive innings).
Each of Dugan and Perez could compete for a bench job on the big league team in Spring Training, but will most likely open the year serving as depth at AAA.
