No Chicago Cubs Sunday Night Games Through Mid-July

Chicago Cubs

kid-watching-tvDepending on your perspective, this may or may not be bad news.

Today, ESPN announced its slate of Sunday Night Baseball games through July 17, and the Chicago Cubs are entirely absent. Naturally, if the Cubs are as competitive as we expect them to be, it’s a fair bet that they’ll show up on Sunday night at least once in the back half of the season – last year, a certain August Sunday Night appearance was pretty special.

The Cardinals and Pirates each show up once, by the way, when they play each other on June 12. Otherwise, it’s a whole lot of Yankees (4), Red Sox (4), Dodgers (3), and Giants (3). I don’t blame ESPN for chasing the ratings, and the Cubs don’t have the sexiest match-ups in the early going: Diamondbacks, Rockies, Reds, Braves, Nationals, Pirates, Giants, Phillies, Diamondbacks, Braves, Pirates, Marlins, Mets, Pirates, Rangers – those are the Sunday games through July 17. I can see a few good ones in there – the Mets on July 3 looks great, but there’s no Sunday Night Game that day. Maybe some of those dates will ultimately be scheduled later on.

The Cubs play the Cardinals (twice), as well as the Dodgers and Giants on Sundays in August and September, so I’m sure there’ll be an ESPN game in there at some point.
