There have been drums beaten aplenty over the past few years – most notably during the second Wild Card era – to move MLB’s Trade Deadline, annually occurring on July 31, further back into August. With an extra playoff spot available, teams are more reluctant to make big moves with two entire months left in the season (though, to be fair, the last few Trade Deadlines have still been very active).
And those drum-beaters are getting their wish! Technically!
MLB trading deadline is now Aug. 1 this year instead of July 31 because 7/31 falls on a Sunday this year.

I was not aware that MLB was opposed to the deadline falling on a Sunday, which, given how much front offices work these days, seems a bit antiquated. Or maybe it’s because all of the games on Sunday during the day?
In any case, it’s not as if moving the deadline a day later to Monday will allow everyone to kick back and relax on their Sunday. There will still be frantic calls, last-minute discussions, trades pulled off, and hugs watched. It’ll just be Sunday and Monday now, instead of Saturday and Sunday.

That may not be big news to you, but that’s huge news in the Taylor Family Household. Why? Because The Wife’s birthday is July 30 – which means, absent some big change like this, we were never going to get to really celebrate her birthday on her actual birthday so long as I was doing the marathon blogging session at the Trade Deadline (which I have no plans to cease any time soon).
But now we can do it! You hear that, honey?! I have no excuses this year! I have to treat you on your birthday!
