Jason Heyward Already in Arizona Working with His New Hitting Coach (and BP VIDEO)

Chicago Cubs

By now, I’m sure you’ve seen this shot of new Chicago Cub Jason Heyward in Cubbie Blue, but, if you haven’t, gaze upon his majesty with glee:

Cubs Den’s John Arguello has even more today:

Speaking of that video:

It almost looks like baseball, folks. I am very happy.

Carrie Muskat writes about Heyward’s early arrival in Mesa, Arizona, where Heyward has already been working with his new hitting coach John Mallee. You’re going to want to read that article to start getting geeked for Spring Training. It sounds like Heyward and Mallee have been spending a lot of time together looking at video, working on Heyward’s swing, etc.

It’s worth reminding folks that Heyward, who is still just 26, posted a 121 wRC+ last year despite an absolutely enormous 57.2% groundball rate. For years, folks have dreamed on the offensive potential in that body, which has gone somewhat untapped because of Heyward’s unique swing. With just a touch more elevation, there’s no reason to believe Heyward couldn’t explode offensively.

But, even if he doesn’t, I’ll say it again: despite all the ground balls last year, Heyward was a .293/.359/.439 hitter, and that would look mighty nice near the top of the Cubs’ prodigious lineup.

Still, I love hearing that, even after cashing in big-time in free agency, Heyward is already showing up early and putting in the work with his new coach.

Meanwhile, the Cubs are still doing the transaction thing, picking up another lefty reliever.
