For Soler, though, a lot of his in-game power ability has been tempered by an uppercut swing that generates a ton of line drives, but also a ton of topspin that does not allow his rockets to carry (that’s how a guy who is among the league leaders in exit velocity can still not hit a huge number of homers).
But, as we saw when he came back from his injuries in the second half last year, Soler appeared to be generating more backspin with his swing, and thus, more carry on the ball. The sample was tiny, but the power was up.
Soler showed it off again today with this monster blast the other way:
