Chicago Cubs

sloan park cubs springThe Cubs kept things tight into the middle innings in this one, but then the wheels (and a lot of the starters) came off, and it turned into a rout.

Here’s your Box Score.

Other things …

  • By all accounts, Jake Arrieta was shredding once again today, throwing in the 95/96mph range, and at one point seemingly walking a batter on purpose so that he could pitch with someone on base (something he mentioned thinking about doing last time out). He did give up an earned run in his four innings of work (five Ks), but he was basically Jake.
  • Pierce Johnson followed Arrieta, and he was not basically Jake. Four hits, a walk, four earned runs (five total runs) and two strikeouts over his two innings. The bulk of the damage came in his second inning of work, which included two homers.
  • C.J. Riefenhauser and Jean Machi got hit quite a bit thereafter, and the Padres started piling on the runs.
  • Jorge Soler had a really tough day in left field, misplaying a catchable fly ball into a ground rule double, and letting a single get by him (which turned into a little league home run). Some initial adjustments are to be expected for Soler in left field, since he’s only ever played right, but it’s also possible (probable?) that he’s also still working out his overall struggles in the outfield, taking good routes, getting good initial reads on the ball, etc. It was a very serious problem last year, and a move to left field, in isolation, is not necessarily going to help.
  • Offensively, there wasn’t much doing for the Cubs, though Kris Bryant did have a deep double (together with a Jesus Guzman double, those were the Cubs’ only extra-base hits of the game):

  • Luis enjoyed himself at the game:
