Although it was just a Spring Training, the game last night between the Giants and Cubs (1) was on ESPN), (2) was started by two aces, (3) featured an on-field dust-up, (4) tons of offense, (5) Jake Arrieta leaving early with a physical issue (a blister), and (6) numerous lead changes and exciting plays.
The final score was 16-14 Cubs, and you can see the crazy box score here. The Cubs had 19 hits and 7 walks. The Giants had 14 hits and 9 walks. Something was in the water.
On the pitching side, we’ve covered Jake Arrieta’s ugly inning and departure, and we really can’t know more until we see him out there again.
After he left in the first inning, the Cubs got just three scoreless relief innings: minor league Starling Peralta pitched one late, but also Justin Grimm (well, not scoreless, but no earned runs) and Neil Ramirez.
[adinserter block=”2″]Most of the damage came via that first Arrieta inning, and then relievers who will not be part of the big league team this year.
Offensively, the Cubs got multi-hit performances from Dexter Fowler, Albert Almora, Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, Ben Zobrist, and Jeimer Candelario.
Kris Bryant also played left field in the game, and seemed fine out there, as he does. It’s just another bit of versatility for this roster. One of Bryant’s hits was this easy power triple to right:
