I generally feel fairly annoyed by every Cubs loss. When it comes to a bad team, it goes double. When it comes from a lost late lead, it goes double again. So, then, today’s loss was, what? Four times annoying?
And it’s OK for me – or you – to feel that way, and simultaneously know this is a very good Cubs team that has won a whole lot of games. Thinking this loss was aggravating does not make you a meatball fan. If you start talking about making wholesale changes, of course, that’s another story.
Kyle Hendricks pitched very well (even in a long, two-run first inning, it wasn’t all, or even mostly, his fault), and the Cubs got out to an early lead in this one. Unfortunately Pedro Strop had a disastrous and short outing where he couldn’t seem to find the strike zone except for the pitch that met Brett Wallace’s bat, and turned a one-run lead on a two-run deficit. Offensively, the Cubs left plenty of opportunities out on the basepaths (and also had several deep drives seem to just die at the track), so it’s not like this wasn’t a competitive game.
So the Cubs lost the opener of the doubleheader, and now we just have to hope for a win tonight so that the Cubs can get a split (and win the series).
