Cubs Minor League Daily: No Wins, But Plenty of Leaders

Albert AlmoraThere were no wins in the Cubs’ organization yesterday. Not one. But let’s not dwell on that. Let’s take a look at how well some Cubs’ prospects stack up to the entirety of minor league baseball instead (all numbers taken prior to yesterday’s games).

For example, did you know that Willson Contreras ranks 12th in all the minors with an OBP of .436? And that Dan Vogelbach checks in at number 15?

Donnie Dewees leads all the minor leagues with eight triples, and Albert Almora ranks seventh in total hits with 47.

Paul Blackburn ranks fifth in ERA (minimum 33 innings) with a 1.02, and Jake Stinnett‘s 5.6 H/9 are good for 11th place.

And if it seems like the Cubs are stealing more bases this year, you may be on to something. Jacob Hannemann has 17 steals, and that is good for 9th place. Jeffrey Baez comes in at 27th with 13.[adinserter block=”1″]

Of course, those were before yesterday’s games. You can head on over to Baseball Reference and see how the Cubs stack up against the rest of the minor leagues based on today’s numbers with this link.

Triple A: Iowa Cubs
Reno 5, Iowa 3
After seven and a half innings this was a tie game.

  • John Andreoli: 1 for 4, 2B
  • Albert Almora: 1 for 4
  • Willson Contreras: 1 for 4
  • Dan Vogelbach: 1 for 3, BB
  • Drew Rucinski: 1 for 2
  • Double A: Tennessee Smokies
    Birmingham 3, Tennessee 2
Once again, the Smokies staged a late rally that came up just short.

  • Paul Blackburn: 6 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 3 BB, 3 K
  • Chesny Young: 3 for 4, BB
  • Jacob Hannemann: 1 for 4, 2B. He also had an outfield assist.

  • Bijan Rademacher: 1 for 3, BB[adinserter block=”2″]
  • High A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans
    Frederick 5, Myrtle Beach 2
The Pelicans’ winning streak came to an end on the last day of the road trip.

  • Jonathan Martinez: 6 IP, 5 R, 8 H, 1 BB, 3 K
  • Jordan Minch: 2 IP, 1 H, 3 K
  • Ian Happ: 1 for 3, 2B, BB
  • Yasiel Balaguert: 2 for 4, 2B
  • Gioskar Amaya: 1 for 4, 2B
  • Low A: South Bend Cubs

South Bend had the day off.

    Other Notes

  • In case you missed it yesterday, Dan Vogelbach is the Pacific Coast League Player of the Week. With four home runs in May and an OPS of .979 so far, he should be a strong candidate for some player of the month honors in a few weeks as well.
  • And Jason Vosler took home the honors in the Carolina League:

Why Craig Counsell Wanted Miles Mastrobuoni on the Cubs’ Bench

I don't know why Miles Mastrobuoni bugs some folks, but it's probably heavily-weighted toward his small-sample, bad-batted-ball-luck start last year, and that time he didn't dive while playing in right field. It can be hard to shake initial impressions, I...

Kinda Sounds Like Craig Counsell May Have a Set Top Three in the Batting Order
