Cubs Minor League Daily: Ever Wanted to Sleep In A Ballpark?

myrtle beach pelicans logoIf you are a Scout and you are in Myrtle Beach this evening, you might have a chance to sling a sleeping bag on the outfield grass. It is Scout Night for the Pelicans, and in addition to seeing a talented baseball team, that means some scouts will have a chance to camp in the outfield overnight in addition to watching a post-game movie on the scoreboard.

The downside? There is a game the next day, so they’ll wake the campers up and chase them out at at 7 AM so the groundscrew can get to work.

It is also “Bring Your Own Instrument Night“. Show up with an instrument, and they’ll hand you sheet music. During the game, instrumented fans will have a chance to give an unrehearsed concert for the … lucky… other fans. Here’s hoping some fans show up with bagpipes. I happen to like bagpipes.

Triple A: Iowa Cubs
Tacoma 2, Iowa 1
Not a lot of offense for either team in this one.

  • Ryan Williams: 5 IP, 1 R, 6 H, 2 K (departed with “apparent injury,” but no details yet)
  • Felix Pena: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 K
  • Spencer Patton: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA of 0.00.
  • John Andreoli: 2 for 4, 2B, HR
  • Dan Vogelbach: 1 for 3, BB[adinserter block=”1″]
  • Double A: Tennessee Smokies
    Tennessee 7, Biloxi 2
Zastryzny turned in one of the best starts of his career.

  • Rob Zastryzny: 7.2 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 8 K
  • Starlin Peralta: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 2 K
  • Matt Szczur: 0 for 1, BB
  • Jacob Hannemann: 0 for 2, BB
  • Chesny Young: 2 for 4
  • Mark Zagunis: 1 for 4, 2B
  • Jeimer Candelario: 2 for 4, 2B
  • Billy McKinney: 2 for 4, 3B
  • High A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans
    Myrtle Beach 4, Winston-Salem 3
Leal also had a nice start, albeit one lighter in the strikeout department.

  • Erick Leal: 7 IP, 3 R, 7 H, 1 K
  • James Farris: 1 IP, 2 K
  • Gleyber Torres: 3 for 4, 2 2B, CS
  • Ian Happ: 1 for 3, BB
  • Yasiel Balaguert: 2 for 4, HR
  • Low A: South Bend Cubs
Great Lakes 5, South Bend 3
The Cubs managed just five hits in this one, and their two errors were costly.

  • Kyle Twomey: 5 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 5 H, 2 K
  • Casey Bloomquist: 3 IP, 3 R, 4 H, 3 K
  • Andrew Ely: 2 for 4
  • Eloy Jimenez: 2 for 4, 2 HR
  • Other Notes

  • The two home run day from Eloy Jimenez lifted him to four homers on the season and gave him a season line of .326/.357/.500. He still has a lot of strikeouts (40 in 36 games), but many of those were early in the year. His strikeout rate has been dropping fairly steadily. I think we are starting to see why he was ranked ahead of Gleyber Torres by may analysts in his International Free Agent class.[adinserter block=”2″]
  • Kristopher Negron, typically in infielder, played left for Iowa last night. It probably means very little, but given that Maddon likes to have positional flexibility, it could be an indication the Cubs are seeing how Negron might handle a multi-positional bench role in Chicago should the need arise.
  • Want to see a Balaguert home run? Of course you do:
  • And how about a ridiculous catch by Hannemann?
