Even though many of the games have been close, Iowa has now dropped six straight contests and has fallen into last place. They trail Oklahoma City by six games with a record of 18-22. Fortunately, after today’s game in Tacoma, the I-Cubs come home for four against El Paso followed by four against Albuquerque. Then again, their road record (10-11) is actually slightly better than their home record (8-11), so that may be a bit of a mixed blessing.
A two-game winning streak has the Smokies within two games of .500 at 20-22. That places them in third, five games behind Jackson. Tennessee has seven games this week, starting with a doubleheader at home today against Biloxi. The Biloxi series wraps up on Monday, and then it is off to nearby Chattanooga for a five game set starting Wednesday. Next week, after the Chattanooga series, first place Jackson comes to the Smokies.
At 23-18, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans continue to play some of the best baseball in the farm system, but they still trail first place Salem by 5.5 games. Every day brings a game for the Pelicans this week, starting with two more at home against Lynchburg, then heading up to Carolina for three, and then coming home on Friday to face Wilmington.[adinserter block=”1″]
And finally we have the first place South Bend Cubs. The Cubs’ Midwest League affiliate has beaten now second place Lake County in two straight games (in Lake County) to take sole possession of first place by a game (tied in wins, up by two in the loss column). There is a lot of baseball left to be played, but … their first half magic number is 27. They can open up a bit of a lead on Lake County with games today and tomorrow, and after that they finally come home for the first time since May 7.

Once again Stinnett had some issues staying in the strike zone, but he turned out a pretty decent nonetheless.
Low A: South Bend Cubs
