Chicago Cubs

I’m so happy about that blowout win that I won’t even dwell on the fact that it is mathematically less significant than when the Cubs lose, which they’ve done a lot lately, because I said I would NOT dwell on it!

No, but seriously. That was fun.

From thing one, the Cubs’ bats were on Michael Wacha (except when he wasn’t in the zone), and the team batted around in the first inning, including two-run doubles by each of David Ross and Jason Hammel.

That was plenty for Hammel, who cruised, pitching well with a big lead. He stayed in the zone (one of the walks he gave up included a “ball” that was pretty much right down the pipe), let the Cardinals put the ball in play, and looked in command all night.

Not that the Cubs let up after the first. Jorge Soler later added a two-run homer, and then the Cubs put up a four spot in the 9th inning (which included a challenge at first base by Joe Maddon – mostly to get Addison Russell a hit, but I wouldn’t rule out the possibility that it was also a little trolling).
