Envision the closest thing to a “regular” Cubs lineup you can, and tonight’s edition is it:
- Dexter Fowler, CF
- Jason Heyward, RF
- Kris Bryant, 3B
- Anthony Rizzo, 1B
- Ben Zobrist, 2B
- Jorge Soler, LF
- Addison Russell, SS
- Miguel Montero, C
- Jake Arrieta, P
Ever since Jorge Soler became a more frequent starter a few weeks ago, this has had the look of a regular-ish lineup.

In recent years, Kazmir has been something of a reverse-split pitcher, faring better against righties than lefties, though the Cubs’ lineup tonight doesn’t really skew one way or the other – Soler is in there as a righty, and Montero is in there as a lefty. Each probably was going to start no matter what, Soler because he’s getting regular starts and Montero because he is the default (though not personal) catcher for Arrieta, all else equal.
Dexter Fowler returns tonight after getting yesterday’s game off, partly to rest a sore heel.
