Enhanced Box Score: Diamondbacks 3, Cubs 2 – June 5, 2016
What a weird game.
The Cubs lost a second straight Jake Arrieta start – the only two games they’ve lost in the last 12.
Joe Maddon was ejected for arguing a checked swing.
The Diamondbacks struck out 18 times in a game they still managed to win.
Arrieta struck out 12 batters, but lasted just five innings and gave up three earned runs on nine hits.
That last one was the strangest part, as Arrieta recorded 12 of his 15 outs via strikeout, which is nuts. But 9 of the 10 balls in play fell in for hits! Neither of those things is likely to repeat itself any time soon.
Offensively, the Cubs kept blasting Patrick Corbin offerings into the ground, and outside of a Jake Arrieta double and a Javy Baez opposite field homer, they did shockingly little against a guy who’d been very hittable this year.
The whole game was just weird. I’m not even really all that annoyed (which is a rarity for me in a one-run loss); just shaking my head.
