Chicago Cubs

Even as Max Scherzer was dominating the Cubs to the tune of a perfect game, I felt that familiar surge of excitement in the 6th inning when Addison Russell exploded on a pitch and tied the game at one with a solo shot. It’s not like I assumed the dam would burst or anything, but getting that run on the board – tying the game, ending the perfecto bid – felt like the moment the game was really going to get started.

But in the bottom of the frame, Kyle Hendricks hit a wall, the Nationals scored three runs, and the Cubs didn’t do anything thereafter. It’s not always a story book situation, eh?

Scherzer had a generous zone to work with, but he took advantage and had killer stuff going. Hendricks was not too bad, himself, but lost it a bit in the sixth.

In a weird way it’s almost refreshing to see the Cubs lose a game in convincing, mundane fashion against a good team. That’s supposed to happen a lot in a given season. Moving on.
