Enhanced Box Score: Cubs 4, Nationals 3 – June 14, 2016
Just a little over a year ago, and just a little after he’d been called up to the big leagues, the Cubs were facing the Nationals in a tight one at Wrigley Field when Addison Russell had a chance to shine. You may remember the game as the first time Kris Bryant hit the video board – he hit himself, actually – and, indeed, that was a huge homer to tie the game up in the 8th. But I remember it as the game when Addison Russell sent one deep to the gap the other way, and walked the Cubs off.
I thought of that game tonight, and I actually thought of it before the late-game heroics. I wasn’t specifically thinking about any players – just the feel of the game. Two excellent teams, playing a close one, battling the entire way. In this one, it was the Nationals who tied things up in the 8th, but, once again, the Cubs untied it in the 9th.
And it was another young player, just recently called up, who hit a double to the gap to score what would prove to be the winning run. That run was scored by Russell. But the hit came courtesy of Albert Almora. (You can watch it here.)
We’ll have more on the game soon, but let’s just let Almora have this moment.
