Chicago Cubs

The hell.

Was that.

A game that looked like a run-of-the-mill pitchers duel, featuring an anemic showing by the Cubs’ offense, a shockingly capable performance by the Reds’ bullpen, and a blown save in the 9th to spoil a great Jon Lester outing … became something else entirely.

It was a 15-inning marathon, of which the final three innings were pure madness. The Cubs ran out of position players. The Cubs got perfect performances from everyone in the bullpen except Pedro Strop and Hector Rondon. Then they went down to just seven position players. Travis Wood came in to play left field. And then he pitched, and Spencer Patton went to left field. Then they switched again. Then Pedro Strop played the entire 15th inning in left field, but did not pitch.

In between, the Cubs finally scored a run on a Kris Bryant single, and then capped things off with a freaking grand slam by Javy Baez. Couldn’t score for more than a full ball game, then scored five runs. And Baez was the only regular still in the game at that point who didn’t have a hit in the game.

Just a freaking wacky game. Much more on it tomorrow.
