[Here’s one roster move for the day, as the Cubs needed to open up two spots for Adam Warren and Tommy La Stella. It sounds like the Cubs are deciding right now whether to put David Ross on the DL after taking a foul ball off the mask yesterday.]
Today, the Chicago Cubs designated reliever Joel Peralta for assignment. Peralta, 40, got a five-appearance, four-inning tryout to be the Cubs’ LOOGY (in his recent career, Peralta had been especially effective at getting lefties out). It did not work out, as Peralta not only did not get results, he also looked extremely hittable in each of his outings.
It made total sense for the Cubs to give Peralta a chance right now as they figure out what they have in the bullpen and what they don’t. It also made sense to cut bait rather quickly, because it was clear that the stuff and pitchability simply wasn’t there.
The Cubs will have 10 days to trade, waive, or release Peralta. If he’s waived and clears waivers, the Cubs could try to send him to AAA Iowa and hang onto him, but both sides might agree at that point that it’s time to move on.
