Cubs Minor League Daily: Smiles From a Crazy South Bend Comeback – You Need It

south bend cubs logoThe Chicago Cubs are a very good team playing very badly right now, and that isn’t fun. It isn’t all that uncommon for good teams to have bad stretches, but that doesn’t help much when the team is in the middle of a bad stretch.

The nice thing about baseball, though, is that we have the minor leagues. It doesn’t matter how bleak things are looking, if only temporarily, at the major league level, you can pretty much bet that some team, somewhere in the system, is playing fantastic baseball. Taking a short vacation to the minor league side of things might be just the ticket for any fans in need of cheering.

Normally on Sunday I survey the standings across the minors, but that can wait. Last night the South Bend Cubs served up the kind of story book, come from behind win that is all but certain to put a smile on the face of the most terrified and depressed Cubs fan on the planet, and given how the team is Chicago is playing, I think we need all the smiles we can get.

The Cubs were trailing 7-5 in a poorly played game at the start of the ninth, and they were trailing 11-5 going into the bottom of the ninth.

The Cubs won 12-11.[adinserter block=”1″][adinserter block=”10″]

The highlight video is an assembly of clips with the radio broadcast included, and you can hear that the Cubs broadcaster doesn’t believe what he’s seeing as the Cubs catch pretty much every break in the books on their way to a seven run, game winning eruption. But don’t take my word for it; watch the video. The first half isn’t as much fun… too many Cubs’ misplays in that first half… but the comeback begins at the 2:57 mark, and that comeback is a thing of beauty. If you don’t watch anything else baseball related today, watch this.

  • Epic comeback or no epic comeback, it is Sunday, so here in an abbreviated form are the current standings.
  • Iowa (41-49) is in 3rd, 11 games behind Oklahoma City.
  • Tennessee (7-8) is in last place, 2.5 games behind Chattanooga and Montgomery. They have lost four straight.
  • Myrtle Beach (8-9) is in second place, half a game behind Salem and Winston-Salem
  • South Bend (12-5) is tied for first with Lansing, 3.5 games ahead of Bowling Green.
  • Eugene (17-6) is in first place, 5.5 games ahead of Salem-Keizer. They have the best record in the league.
  • Arizona (8-8) is in second place, 1.5 games behind the Athletics.
  • Dexter Fowler‘s rehab stay in South Bend comes with some benefits to the South Bend Cubs. Saturday night’s upgraded post game meal was one of the bigger ones.
