Roster Moves: Dexter Fowler is Back! Almora to AAA, Montgomery In, Patton to AAA
He’s back!
After a long and painful month without their starter center fielder and leadoff hitter, the Chicago Cubs get back Dexter Fowler today from a hamstring injury (per multiple reports). He’ll be starting for the Cubs tonight, and, assuming he looks well, things feel much more Cub-like.
As we expected, he’ll take the spot of Albert Almora Jr., who heads back to AAA Iowa. There, he’ll keep working on his approach at the plate, and keeping the glove warm for September (or earlier, if – heaven forbid – another injury pops up).
Meanwhile, on the pitching side of the ledger, earlier today, it looked like Spencer Patton was on his way out of Chicago and back to Triple-A Iowa to accommodate the newest addition to the Cubs bullpen, lefty Mike Montgomery. Sure enough, that’s the case.
Patton indeed heads back to Triple-A to serve as depth for the Major League bullpen, while Montgomery (wearing #38) becomes a lefty weapon out of the pen. I’m interested to see how he’s used early on, because I suspect he’ll be broken in slowly and primarily used against left-handed hitters. If you missed today’s “Getting to Know” on Montgomery courtesy of Michael, I’d encourage you to check it out.
