Well, I pegged this as possibility number two for making room for Joe Nathan today, but I’ll admit it was not the one I guessed.
Lefty Clayton Richard is spared a (temporary?) reprieve and will have a little more time to try and cement his roster spot past the deadline, as it’s Adam Warren headed back to AAA Iowa to make room for Nathan, per multiple reports.
We’ll see what the plan is for Warren, as it’s possible he’ll stretch back out (that start against the Reds was legitimately good), or he might just hang out at Iowa righting the ship until the Cubs figure out the post-deadline bullpen.
As for Nathan, we’ll see what he’s got left in the tank. The reports from the minor leagues were very good. The premium velocity isn’t there anymore, but 91/92 will play if the breaking stuff is still on point.
