Wake Up and Watch Anthony Rizzo Clear the Bases and Give the Cubs a Comeback Win

I know, I know. You are mentally preoccupied with all things Aroldis Chapman trade rumor. We’ll be tracking that closely all day today, I assure you.

In the interim, though, might I suggest you wake yourself up with a look back at how the Cubs capped their dramatic, comeback win yesterday against the Brewers? [adinserter block=”1″]

It was one of those games that looked like a sure loss – listless offense, kicking the ball around on defense, too many walks on the mound, etc. – until suddenly it wasn’t. The Cubs erupted for five runs in the seventh inning, and this bases-clearing double from Anthony Rizzo was the big blow:

Boy, the Brewers really didn’t expect him to put the ball there, eh? It was well struck, sure, but not so hard off the bat that you’d expect to see it rolling, and rolling, and rolling all the way to the wall. But it did, and that allowed everyone to score. It was awesome.

The win gave the Cubs their third straight series win coming out of the break, which is, well, also awesome. It felt like a huge swing win, too: the Cubs went from losing another series to a bad team – and arguably continuing the stretch of bad baseball that plagued them before the break – to winning their third straight series after the break, which clearly fixed them!

Obviously neither of those “takes” would have been accurate, but that’s how it was feeling during and after the game. Cubs fans – present company included – have never been accused of being entirely rational.

As it stands, with those three series wins, and the win just before the break against the Pirates, the Cubs have now won 7 of their last 10.
