The Cubs have been doing a bit of necessary roster shuffling in the lower levels of the minors. Yesterday we discussed briefly the promotion of pitcher Preston Morrison and outfielder Donnie Dewees to High A, but I missed that infielder Bryant Flete had also been promoted to the Pelicans. Flete, 23, did not put up great offensive numbers in South Bend and probably projects more as a minor league veteran type of player than an impact prospect. He will likely absorb a fair amount of the innings at shortstop left by the Gleyber Torres trade.
With three players recently being promoted off their roster, the South Bend Cubs needed some new players. Those players were provided by Eugene. Oscar De La Cruz, one of the top pitching prospects in the organization, Jose Paulino, one of the breakout pitching prospects this season, and outfielder Connor Myers one of the few position players the Cubs drafted in 2016, have all been promoted. No official transaction has cleared the league wires yet, but I strongly suspect all three of these players are headed to South Bend.
Eugene, in return, receives pitcher Erling Moreno from Arizona. Moreno, 19, struck out 33 and walked just 4 in 32.1 IP for Arizona. Now that he is in a league with video footage, we will get to see just what his stuff looks like.
This is probably not the last of the roster shufflings. We will probably see a few more promotions (and probably another trade or two) over the next few days.[adinserter block=”1″]
