Cubs Minor League Daily: Prospect Promotions and Weekly Honors

south bend cubs logoThe Cubs have been doing a bit of necessary roster shuffling in the lower levels of the minors. Yesterday we discussed briefly the promotion of pitcher Preston Morrison and outfielder Donnie Dewees to High A, but I missed that infielder Bryant Flete had also been promoted to the Pelicans. Flete, 23, did not put up great offensive numbers in South Bend and probably projects more as a minor league veteran type of player than an impact prospect. He will likely absorb a fair amount of the innings at shortstop left by the Gleyber Torres trade.

With three players recently being promoted off their roster, the South Bend Cubs needed some new players. Those players were provided by Eugene. Oscar De La Cruz, one of the top pitching prospects in the organization, Jose Paulino, one of the breakout pitching prospects this season, and outfielder Connor Myers one of the few position players the Cubs drafted in 2016, have all been promoted. No official transaction has cleared the league wires yet, but I strongly suspect all three of these players are headed to South Bend.

Eugene, in return, receives pitcher Erling Moreno from Arizona. Moreno, 19, struck out 33 and walked just 4 in 32.1 IP for Arizona. Now that he is in a league with video footage, we will get to see just what his stuff looks like.

This is probably not the last of the roster shufflings. We will probably see a few more promotions (and probably another trade or two) over the next few days.[adinserter block=”1″]

The Pelicans led until Carolina pushed across five in the eighth.

  • Tommy Thorpe: 3.1 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 3 BB, 3 K
  • Charcer Burks: 2 for 5, HR, SB. At eight homers and nineteen steals, he could hit a 10/20 season.
  • Yasiel Balaguert: 1 for 5, 2B
  • Donnie Dewees: 2 for 4, BB, SB. Welcome to High A.
  • Daniel Spingola: 1 for 2, 2 BB

  • Low A: South Bend Cubs

South Bend had the day off.

    Short Season A: Eugene Emeralds
    Salem-Keizer 5, Eugene 1
What began as a pitching duel got away a bit towards the end.

  • Erling Moreno: 5 IP, 5 H, 1 BB, 7 K. Welcome to Short Season A.

  • Trent Giambrone: 1 for 3, BB

  • Javier Assad: 5 IP, 2 H, 3 K

  • Ruben Reyes: 1 for 4, 2B
  • Yohan Matos: 1 for 3, 2B, BB[adinserter block=”3″]
  • Other Notes

  • Trey Martin, the defensive gifted center fielder who was promoted to Tennessee earlier this season, got off to a slow start at the plate in Double A, but has really stepped up that part of his game of late. His Double A season OPS is still just .586 in 34 games, but in July (22 games) his line reads .300/.319/.429 with a pair of home runs.
  • Myrtle Beach catcher Ian Rice was hit by a pitch in the third inning yesterday, and then left the game in the fifth. Hopefully his exit is nothing serious.
  • As he is leaving town, Jose Paulino has been named the Northwest League Pitcher of the Week thanks to his seven innings of seven strikeout, shutout baseball.
  • In related news, Yasiel Balaguert has been named the Carolina League Player of the Week. When you hit .423/.448/.731 with five doubles and a homer over the span of a week, people tend to take notice.
