Enhanced Box Score: Cubs 3, Marlins 2 – August 2, 2016
It wasn’t the easy, breezy win in the first game of the series, but the Cubs managed to hang on and beat the Marlins for the second straight night.
In full disclosure, I was on the road for a chunk of the first half of the game, so there’s a lot I didn’t see. Jason Hammel was solid and efficient in his six innings, and although the Cubs were able to go Pedro Strop, Hector Rondon, and Aroldis Chapman for the 7th, 8th, and 9th, as is the plan, the first of the trio gave up a couple runs on three hits and an error of his own. He got two strikeouts in the inning, but Travis Wood – and a diving Chris Coghlan – had to finish up the inning.
At the top of the order, Dexter Fowler and Willson Contreras reached based three times apiece, and the Cubs scored a run in each of the first, third, and fifth innings.
