New Reliever Joe Smith Will Arrive Today, Spencer Patton Will Head Back to Iowa
Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon just told The Score that new reliever Joe Smith will be with the Cubs tonight when they face the Marlins, and shuttle-bound reliever Spencer Patton will head back to AAA Iowa (h/t CCO).
Patton was called up yesterday to help supplement the bullpen after the wild game on Sunday went 12 innings. The starter in that game, Brian Matusz, lasted just three innings, and was designated for assignment after the game, which made room for Patton in the first place.
As it turned out, Kyle Hendricks went the distance in a gem, and Patton’s services were not required.
Smith, 32, was acquired at the deadline yesterday for pitching prospect Jesus Castillo. He’s a sidearming righty who is particularly tough on other righties, and you can expect Maddon to employ him especially in situations where you want a groundball.
