Cubs Minor League Daily: Ely to Flete to Balaguert

Chicago Cubs

Myrtle Beach may not have the super-prospect middle infield they opened the season with, but the double play combo of Ely and Flete turned in one of the best twin killings of the season last night. The fact that it came in the eighth inning with the Pelicans clinging to a narrow lead makes it all the better.

Triple A: Iowa Cubs
Iowa 7, New Orleans 4
Iowa broke the game open with a big second inning, and the pitching took care of things from there.

Double A: Tennessee Smokies
Tennessee 5, Birmingham 1
The Smokies carried a shutout into the ninth.

High A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans
Myrtle Beach 6, Carolina 4
The Pelicans have now won six in a row.

Low A: South Bend Cubs
Fort Wayne 2, South Bend 1
The Cubs rallied in the ninth, but could not tie it up.

Short Season A: Eugene Emeralds
Vancouver 8, Eugene 4
The Emeralds’ second half began with a late inning loss.

Rookie: Arizona Cubs
Cubs 4, Padres 3
A three run rally in the eighth put the Cubs ahead to stay.

Other Notes

  • Not only have the Pelicans won six in a row, they have taken first place away from Salem and hold a 2.5 game lead. Since Salem won the first half, beating Salem for the division title isn’t the only way to make the playoffs – finishing second to Salem in the overall standings would also get it done – but winning the division certainly makes things easy.
  • Eloy Jimenez had most of the day off yesterday, and Twitter barely noticed. Imagine if this had been July 30 and he had the day off. What a difference a week makes.
  • In case you missed it last night, the top twenty slots in the new Bleacher Nation Top 40 Prospects List have been announced, including the fourth Number One in Top 40 history.
