The Cubs scored a couple runs early and added a nice insurance run in the 6th inning. John Lackey pitched extremely well, though he left early with the trainer.
None of these things are on your mind right now, because the game completely turned from the 7th to the 8th inning. In the bottom of the 7th, the Cubs loaded the bases with nobody out, and were in position to put the game out of reach. They failed the score. Immediately thereafter, in the top of the 8th, Hector Rondon finally returned, having not pitched since August 2, and allowed the first two to reach, and then Stephen Piscotty destroyed a three-run homer. The game went from possible Cubs blowout to Cardinals late comeback win in the span of 10 minutes. Brandon Moss added a homer off of Rondon for good measure (and the Cardinals added another run in the inning thereafter). It was all very hard to stomach, especially after yesterday.[adinserter block=”1″]
If John Lackey’s not actually hurt, and if Hector Rondon just got baseball’d a bit, then there’s really not much to take away from this loss.
Well, some frustration, I suppose.
