Last night, it was not so good. The Cubs will try again tonight against another top prospect making his big league debut – that’s happened a few times this year, it seems like. And with a bullpen game on tap – and a tapped bullpen – the bats might really need to blow up.

There’s not an obvious stacking of any particular handed-ness in this one, but with Jason Heyward out for the weekend, the Cubs weren’t necessarily going to stack this one against rookie Hoffman anyway. The young righties numbers at AAA are not overwhelming, but nobody questions the talent. If he’s the type that gets a little extra bump from finally being in the show, he might actually be pretty tough. Then again, if he starts overthrowing and the Cubs are patient, they could eat him alive.
Miguel Montero gets a rare start behind the plate, as he’ll be working with Mike Montgomery, making his first start with the Cubs.
Ben Zobrist is back in there at second base, and Javy Baez sits.
