That was absolutely as well as the game could have gone.
The bats blew up, which was necessary to keep the bullpen in an optimal position all game (even though the bullpen wound up being completely unnecessary). Kris Bryant had another big game. Dexter Fowler kept getting on base. Ben Zobrist had a huge game. I could go on. I will, in fact, in a moment.
Mike Montgomery threw 4.1 great innings. And then Trevor Cahill finished up the game with 4.2 great innings of his own.
Just an incredible tandem performance.[adinserter block=”1″]
But I’ve gotta give a ton of love to Miguel Montero. Having been relegated to a back-up role after a tough year, and recently losing even a start with Jake Arrieta on the mound, Montero got a rare opportunity to play today, and he not only drove in three runs on a couple two-out hits, he added another hit late (all three had eyes, so to speak), and he also made a ridiculous play on a bounced strikeout pitch from Trevor Cahill. You’ll be seeing the highlight if you haven’t already – the ball kicked so high and so far back that a catcher should basically never have a play on it. But Miggy made it.
