Unless you count the four-game set against the White Sox as two two-game sets because they were split between parks (I don’t), the Chicago Cubs have not lost a series since the All-Star break. That was over a month ago.
Today, that streak will continue or end, as the Cubs and Rockies wrap up their three-game set, with each team having claimed one of the first two games.
Jason Hammel starts for the Cubs, and, like Kyle Hendricks and his MLB-best ERA, he’ll be trying to protect a microscopic ERA at Coors Field. Not easy. For Hammel, he’s got baseball’s best ERA in the second half, at just 0.95.
The Rockies will send out veteran lefty Jorge De La Rosa, who for years managed to have a great deal of success with the Rockies, where so many other pitchers had failed. This year, however, he’s been flat terrible. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t still have a good start or two in him, but the odds are not in his favor, especially against this Cubs lineup.
Speaking of the lineup, Jorge Soler was scratched (foul ball off his leg last night), so the guys move around a bit, and Matt Szczur enters. Hopefully there’s no serious issue for Soler, who obviously has had leg issues, and that includes a stress fracture in his leg back in 2013, which started with a foul ball.
