Cubs Minor League Daily: Whew, Eloy Jimenez Returns to South Bend’s Lineup

eloy jimenez cubs[Intro by Brett (because Luke wrote something else up here that is going to be its own post (you needed that information, didn’t you?))]

One of the Cubs’ most significant breakout prospects this year is South Bend outfielder Eloy Jimenez, who is laying waste to the Midwest League at age 19 to the tune of a .337/.378/.532 batting line, and an OPS 54(!!!) points higher than the next best mark in the league.

But, following a hit by pitch (and a collision with an outfield wall, I’m told by @NSidersReport), Jimenez was removed from a game on August 14, and he hadn’t played since.

… until last night. Naturally, he’s singled and doubled in his return to the lineup, which comes just in time for the home stretch in the minor leagues.[adinserter block=”1″]

  • Other Notes

  • Minor league baseball will look a little different next season. Two teams in the California League (High A) will be shutting down after this season, and two new teams will be added to the Carolina League to make up for it. High Desert and Bakersfield, two teams with stadiums that were not well thought of by many minor league people, will vanish. In the Carolina League, Fayettville will probably get one of the new teams, and the other (partly owned by the Rangers) will play in Kinston. If you’ve never heard of Kinston, don’t feel bad. I had to look that one up as well (it is about halfway between Raleigh and the coast).
  • There will be some impact from this change on the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, but it shouldn’t be significant. The Pelicans will see each other team in the league a few times less per year, but that’s about it.
  • Speaking of minor league wide events, the 2016 edition of Mascot Mania is underway. This time the country had been divided into regions, and in two of the regions there is a Cub affiliate doing pretty well. Sluggo, the neon green bear-like entity from Eugene was fifth in the West at about midnight last night, and the Rally Ranger representing Tennessee was fifth in the Midwest (Tennessee in the Midwest? Interesting…).
