It is now official. The Myrtle Beach Pelicans can mathematically finish no lower than second (to first half winner Salem) in their division, and that means they have clinched a playoff slot in the 2016 postseason. The Pelicans are the defending Carolina League champs and are the fourth team in the Cubs organization to officially clinch a postseason slot this season.
Barring an unthinkably epic collapse of unprecedented proportions, big league Chicago will become the fifth team in the organization to clinch sometime in the next few weeks.
I have not attempted to scour the history books, but I feel pretty confident in saying that the Cubs have not had five teams in the organization make the playoffs in the same season since I started covering the Cubs’ farm system about five years ago. Having a lot of playoff teams isn’t necessarily indicative of having a talent rich organization, but, given that the four farm teams to make the playoffs are all in A ball or lower, I think we can comfortably view this as confirmation that there is another wave of pretty good talent in the lower minors.
It also means we are in for a fun month of September as Arizona, Eugene, South Bend, and Myrtle Beach all chase their respective league championships. That, of course, is just the appetizer for October.[adinserter block=”1″]
Triple A: Iowa Cubs
Iowa had the day off.
Double A: Tennessee Smokies
Tennessee 6, Jackson 5
The Smokies have won four straight.
High A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans
Myrtle Beach 2, Carolina 1 in ten innings.
The Pelicans won despite giving up ten hits and committing two errors.
Low A: South Bend Cubs
South Bend 11, West Michigan 10 in ten innings.
The Cubs had to score twice in the tenth to secure this walkoff after losing a 9-2 lead.
Short Season A: Eugene Emeralds
Everett 1, Eugene 0
The Emeralds did not get their first hit until the eighth inning.
Rookie: Arizona Cubs
Angels 4, Cubs 0
Despite six hits, the Cubs were kept off the board.
